Does your puppy bite everything? How to handle puppy biting

Why do puppies bite?

Puppies use their mouths to explore. They may also mouth during play, when excited or while teething.

Not every bite has the same cause, so notice when it happens.

Biting during play

Puppies can quickly turn hand or clothing play into more intense mouthing.

Teach that hands are not toys and redirect the game to an appropriate toy.

What if your puppy bites your hands?

If biting starts during petting or play, stop the interaction and remove your hands.

Stay neutral for a few seconds and resume when the puppy is calm. If it continues, end that game.

Redirect instead of constantly saying “No”

A puppy needs to understand what they can do instead.

Offer a toy, remove access to inappropriate objects and reinforce suitable behaviour.

Too much excitement

Some puppies become more mouthy because they are too excited, not because they need more activity.

Pause the game, let the puppy settle and make sure they get enough rest.

What should you avoid?

Avoid intense hand play, chasing, pulling clothing and physical punishment for biting.

Focus on teaching another way to play and interact.
